Itinerary
Modern-day Rome still has numerous reminders of the fascist movement that came to power in 1922. Led by Mussolini, the fascists wanted to renovate Italy’s capital city, developing a new infrastructure and building new monuments that were to symbolise the might of the new regime. The goal of the new dictator was to create a Third Rome to rival that of Caesar’s Rome and the Rome of the Popes. Mussolini saw the 1920’s as his time, and on this unique tour we visit some of the most interesting building and other structures which came to be powerful symbols of the fascist regime. On this tour we travel back in time to the twenty years that helped to shape the Italy of today; from the rise of fascism to its defeat in WWII. The itinerary begins in Piazza Venezia where Mussolini had his headquarters and takes in the innovative EUR district and the sports centre with the famous obelisk that bears his name.
As we follow in Mussolini’s footsteps through Rome’s historic sites we will find the answers to many questions raised about him: who was he, who were his followers, what did he do for his country and why is he still today a much talked about and controversial figure. If you want to know more about Italy’s history, this is the perfect tour for you!

Fascinating Tour
Our tour was conducted by Francesco and was terrific. Correspondence and booking were easy, and Francesco was prompt. Our tour began at the Italian Forum and then we took a taxi to EUR. Both areas were fascinating for both history and architecture as well as the vision Mussolini and the fascists had. Francesco was incredibly knowledgeable and made this topic (not always easy to learn about particularly with current politics) so intriguing. We had a great half day with Francesco, and it really was a nice contrast to the ancient history of Rome.
An excellent explanation...
An excellent explanation of the Facist government rise and fall through the examination of architecture. Our host was.highly knowledgeable.
Off the beaten path tour of modern Rome history
If you are interested in learning about and seeing the Rome of the 20th century interwar period, plus some of the best examples of rationalist architecture, then this tour is for you! This tour also avoids the crowds; we didn't encounter a single tourist the entire tour, so it felt like we had Rome to ourselves. We highly recommend this tour!
A different Rome
The tour features a different side of Rome. Our guide Francesco is knowledgeable and offered a lot of insights about Mussolini. A must for history or architecture buffs.
Rome beyond the usual tourist attractions
Bruno is a spectacular guide- one of the best we have ever had in our years of travel. He is extremely well informed and presents information clearly and enthusiastically. The subject of the tour- Mussolini- was presented in a nuanced way that helped us better understand the history of Italy. He took us places that tourists don’t ordinarily see. He is a terrific guide and wonderful company.
