Wat Chedi Luang, also known as “The temple of the Great Stupa”, is an impressive temple ruin. The construction of the temple lasted from 1391 to 1475. Although the temple collapsed in 1545 due to an earthquake, it was for centuries the tallest building in Chiang Mai. The massive and very impressive chedi (pagoda) dominating the area is its most prominent feature. Wat Chedi Luang is also famous for once housing the Emerald Buddha, one of the most important religious relics in Thailand, which can now be found in the Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

The temple that is also known as the Wat Lok Molee houses one of the largest and most impressive chedis in Chiang Mai. The massive chedi was built in 1527 when it must have dominated the area. The chedi contains the ashes of several Kings of the Mengrai dynasty, who ruled the Lanna Kingdom from the end of the 13th century until 1558 when the Burmese invaded the Kingdom.

Lovely temples and great food with Jan

We had a wonderful experience with our guide, Jan. She was prompt picking us up at the meeting spot and patiently took us through three unique and beautiful temples while explaining the Buddhist religion, history of Chiang Mai, and lifestyle of the monks who tend to the temples. She brought us to the Night Bazaar and shared her favorite foods with us while also discussing neighboring countries to Thailand and what it would be like to visit them. She was kind and gentle and we’d recommend this tour and her as a guide to any Chiang Mai visitors!
