Delve into the history of our wonderful city in one of our famous Black Taxi Tours. Hear the stories behind our tumultuous history from our local guides. Belfast was not on everyone’s list of cities to visit when we received global coverage of the violence here. Your Belfast Murals Tour begins in the Shankill Road area of Belfast which is (Protestant/British), where your Black Taxi Cab driver will explain a detailed history of the area. We begin in 1690, when William of orange arrived in Ireland to defeat King James the 2nd at the famous Battle Of The Boyne. There will then be an explanation about the recent troubles, which started in 1969 and ended when the peace agreement was signed in 1998. You will go for a short walk around the area, where your black taxi cab driver will explain the loyalist murals Belfast has in the area and what they represent. You will have the opportunity to take your own photographs of the Belfast murals.

The peace walls were designed to separate the Catholic (Nationalist) and Protestant (Unionist) populations in Belfast. The first ‘peace lines’ were erected, following the outbreak of violence in 1969 in Northern Ireland. They were built as temporary structures, meant to last only six months. Due to their effective nature, they were built higher, longer, and made permanent and are still here today. The peace walls are adorned with art and messages of hope from tourists.

The final stop will be the International Wall, where you will see a variety of different murals in Belfast. The murals have a general theme of ‘highlighting oppression’ – from the race riots in America in 1969 to current events in Palestine.

You must do this tour

This tour is an absolute must if you are visiting Belfast. Martin, our guide, was brilliant and gave a fascinating if quite sad insight into how politics has influenced life in the city.

Thank you Jake for a fantastic tour, you were brilliant

It wasn't quite clear where we had to pick the taxi up. We were given a number and Street name ie 3 Donegal Square East but really it's the taxi stand (like a bus stop) on the pavement outside that address. Luckily our driver for the tour, Jake, was there waiting for us and approached us and welcomed us into his very clean taxi cab. Jake was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and gave a completely unbiased review. We learnt many things about the troubles, a lot of which surprised us and our hearts went out to all those innocent people who died and suffered during those times. The tour itself stopped about 3 or 4 times, where we got out of the taxi to walk around particular areas in order to see and experience things properly and I must admit, it was a bit of a struggle for us getting in and out as we are disabled, plus it was raining, which obviously could not be controlled, although Jake provided us with adequate cover by way of a good size umbrella each. After the taxi tour we were dropped at Crumlin Road Gaol, where Jake took us to the entrance and made sure we had our tickets and knew what to do before leaving us. The gaol itself was very interesting as well but again was a little overshadowed by our disabilities because of the amount of standing, watching videos about the particular areas of the gaol we were in. There were seats in some of the areas but not enough. Even though we could not manage to spend as much time as we would have liked there, because of the lack of seating by the videos, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and just wished that we could have spent the time to absorb everything more thoroughly.

Eye Opening Experience

Our guide was very knowledgeable and told us a great deal of information. It was a real eye opening experience and I suggest others take part to learn more about not just the history of Belfast but the current ongoings as well.
