Get the VIP treatment at one of Florence’s most in-demand attractions on a cathedral tour after closing time.
Millions of people visit Florence’s Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, better known as the Duomo, every year—which means it can get incredibly crowded. But the crowds will be the least of your concern on this VIP Duomo tour, where you’ll be welcomed into the iconic church in a way that other visitors can only dream of. From the top of the instantly recognizable dome (nearly 500 steps up!) to the serenity of the sanctuary after the general public has cleared out, take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to experience the Duomo like never before.
Your VIP Florence cathedral tour begins in the bustling piazza outside the church. During the day, massive lines to get inside are the norm. That won’t be an issue as you’re ushered past the crowds with your guide and small group as the last public guests for the day are still queuing up to climb the dome.
Start your exploration of the Duomo with a bird’s-eye view over the stunning Renaissance city. You’ll climb the 463 steps to the top of the dome in the company of your guide, taking some time along the way to admire the beautiful frescoes lining the inside of the dome up close. Your expert guide will share the astonishing story of how Brunelleschi—himself an unlikely choice to spearhead the dome project, defied convention to create one of the most impressive and recognizable cupolas in the world.
From there, you’ll head down a few flights of stairs and step out onto both cathedral terraces. Open exclusively just for our group of 19, this private experience of an already rarely visited space is one to cherish. Each terrace offers a different but spectacular view of Florence, as well as an up-close look at the gorgeous red dome itself. Learn just how many bricks went into this spectacular feat (it’s still the largest dome of its kind ever built!) and why modern architects and engineers still have unanswered questions about its construction.
Returning to ground level in the cathedral’s main sanctuary, you’ll be greeted by a serene, empty space—a welcome contrast to the bustle of other visitors that filled the church when we first arrived. Without anyone else around, it’ll be easy to fully appreciate each detail of the incredible art and architecture as your guide leads you on a crowd-free visit.
Last but certainly not least, witness the magical moment when darkness falls over the inside of the Duomo as the Key Master turns off the lights for the day, then step outside and watch the official locking of the cathedral. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment that will stay with you for decades to come.
Despite the popularity of the Duomo, few people can claim to have experienced it as you will on this after-hours tour fit for a VIP. With exclusive access and a knowledgeable guide to lead the way, don’t miss this unique opportunity to have a Florentine icon all to yourself. Your tour also includes tickets (valid for 72 hours after tour) allowing you to visit other monuments like the Opera Duomo Museum, Baptistery of San Giovanni, Crypt of Santa Reparata and Giotto´s Tower on your own.
