We begin our hike in the Tierra Mayor Valley, crossing native forests and peat bogs until we reach the stunning Emerald Lagoon—our first stop after about an hour. From there, the climb starts. We leave the forest behind and ascend rocky terrain for about three hours—the most challenging part of the hike. Surrounded by the towering Andes, the landscape is awe-inspiring. The trail leads past striking orange cliffs to a natural viewpoint overlooking the lagoon below—a spectacular sight. From here, the final ascent begins. Depending on the season, we may need to use our hands, wearing helmets and proper gear, always guided and supported by our guide.

We made it! After four and a half hours of steady, intense hiking, we’re rewarded by the glacier’s towering 20-meter ice wall, its green meltwater lagoon, and the stunning surroundings. This trek guarantees a payoff for the effort. In winter, the lagoon freezes and is covered in snow, allowing us to walk right up to the ice wall. We enjoy a well-deserved lunch, great conversations, and breathtaking views before heading back the same way. This high-difficulty trek requires excellent physical condition and is ideal for those who train regularly and love a good challenge.
Duration: 2 hoursAdmission: NOT_APPLICABLE

Well outfitted trekking company...

Well outfitted trekking company. Local guides are amazing, growing up in these parks they know every step of the terrain. This trek takes you across all terrains that the area has to offer and views up top are incredible.

The walk was pretty good. Up to...

The walk was pretty good. Up to Emerald lake is a nice walk through marshland and forest. After a small break at the lake it's all uphill over rocks and scree. Pretty steep. Once you get up the top it's quite beautiful! The climb back down is not the easiest stroll you'll ever do.
Note this is coming from a sort of fit 51yo male and somewhat less fit 55yo female.
